What to do if you find a baby bird....

Ideally, it is better to observe the baby where is, for a while, to ensure that the parent birds are not in the vicinity, and it is actually abandoned.

The baby bird should only be removed from the place it has been found if the bird is injured or in immediate danger, eg. predator or man-made, or if it has obviously been abandoned.

The baby bird will need to be admitted to a care centre, or veterinary surgery within 24 - 48 hours, to ensure it receives the care necessary to its survival.

It will need to be kept warm and quiet, preferably in a towel-made nest, in a closed box, where it will not be stressed from human intervention. If it is a very young baby that has not yet developed its feathers, then a warm hot-water bottle wrapped in a towel and placed under the nest will help to keep the correct temperature.

Do not feed the young bird milk, as this is not suitable. A glucose, or sugar-water solution may be offered on the end of a childs' clean paintbrush, along with 'ce~de' egg mix, which is available from petshops.

We do stress that professional care is sought urgently in these cases.
